BUSINESSMEN from different cultures and faiths came together to celebrate diversity in Bolton at the launch of this year's Apna Bazaar.

Guests at the "Desi Night" event, which was held at the Festival Hall, Bolton, enjoyed Eastern cuisine and entertainment from performers who will take part in the Bazaar on August 26.

The event gave members of the public the chance to enjoy a sneak preview of the Bazaar, which will feature an East meets West fashion show, and music and dance ranging from Indian bhangra to ballet.

Guests at the launch event gave a rousing reception to one of the Bazaar's star acts, the Jagged Entertainment dance troupe who amazed the audience with a modern street dancing act. Ballet dancer Natalie Berry, aged 16, also performed a show routine.

The audience heard speeches from former City Challenge chief executive Gerry Fitzhenry, and Mumtaz Bashir, who has been responsible for high-profile volunteering programmes, including the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Bolton South-east MP Dr Brian Iddon also spoke, praising the hard work being undertaken to keep Bolton "friendly and multicultural".

He said: "Diversity adds value to the host community. Apna has done a lot to bring people of different cultures and faiths together."

Guests were keen to show their support and sponsorship for the Bazaar, which promises to be a vibrant event.

Tony Gordon, a consultant with MITY Training Services Ltd, said: "It shows a real commitment to community values.

"Events like this are key to building understanding and trust and to bringing people together for all the right reasons."

There is still room for businesses to get involved with Apna Bazaar.
