BOLTON Wanderers' manager Sam Allardyce is quite right when he says we are breeding a nation of couch potatoes.
He says there is not enough home-grown footballing talent because youngsters spend their time watching TV and DVDs or playing computer games, rather than playing football or cricket as they used to do.
The emphasis in schools these days is on passing exams rather than playing sport.
If we are to compete at an international level in any sport we must re-introduce regular physical exercise to the school curriculum, as well as, of course, making sure youngsters continue to study hard.
Even if it does not help us to win the World Cup in four years time, it will ensure that our children do not grow into unhealthy adults.
