A 16-year-old boy has been arrested following an attack on a man who confronted youths throwing eggs at a house.

The 27-year-old victim was left fighting for his life after he was beaten about the head with a plank of wood.

He suffered serious head injuries in the attack in Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, on Saturday.

The victim came out of the property on Newhey Avenue, Benchill at around 10.30pm to confront two teenagers. The pair then attacked him with sticks and planks of wood, police said. He is in a critical condition at Hope Hospital in Salford.

Officers investigating the attack arrested the 16-year-old on Sunday.

Neighbours said the injured man was a lodger at the house and was not known in the area.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "He was staying at his mate's house, He didn't even live round here. It's awful."

They said the victim fell and cracked his head on the kerb after he was attacked.

Newhey Avenue was taped off as police picked through the gardens looking for evidence.

Police described the attackers as between 16 and 18-years-old.

One had ginger hair and one had a shaved head. They were both wearing dark clothing.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the attack to come forward.
