A MISERABLE Monday could not put people passionate about pots off visiting a travelling fair of a different kind in Bolton.

Crowds flocked to Victoria Square in Bolton town centre for the second annual Traditional Lancashire Pot Fair.

Stalls selling china cups, gravy boats, glassware, household goods, pot dolls and beautifully crafted ornaments lined the square.

Visitor Maria Stephenson, from Astley Bridge, said: "The stalls are really lovely. It's something a bit different, but a real piece of our history."

The travelling pot fair is the only one of its kind in the country, and many of the stallholders are from the home of fine pottery, Stoke-on-Trent.

Stallholder Terry Hennessey said: "It's a little piece of tradition that people like. We've been unfortunate with the rain, but it didn't seem to put people off too much and we've had quite a few visitors throughout the day."

Robert Halket, also a stallholder from Stoke, added: "People love it because the goods are cheaper than in the shops and they are really good quality.

"People like the banter when they are buying their pots."

Some of the famous names on offer include Wedgwood, Royal Doulton, Royal Grafton and Royal Stafford.

The pot fair will be in Victoria Square between 9am and 5pm until Saturday.

Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Cliff Morris said: "The fair is excellent. It's a tradition we have in Bolton and it's great we've got it back.

"I would encourage everyone to go and visit it and have a fun day out in Bolton town centre."
