AN apprentice fitter from PSL Tool and Plant Hire on Bridgeman Street in Bolton has been named Apprentice of the Year 2006.

Alex Calcutt, aged 22, from Harwood, is studying Plant Mechanics at Myerscough College near Preston, and received the award from engine manufacturer Briggs and Stratton Commercial Power.

The engine manufacturer identified Alex as one of the UK's top-performing students this year from more than 200 training in the construction, plant and tool hire industry throughout the top technical colleges in the country. The award was also organised in association with the Construction Industry Training Board.

Alex, who is also a keen downhill mountain-bike rider, said: "I'm very proud to have won the award. I'm determined to make the most of the career opportunity I have with PSL Hire and my achievement at College should hopefully stand me in good stead."
