THE 1953 FA Cup runners- up medal won by Bolton Wanderers left back, Ralph Banks, sold for £2,500 at an auction yesterday.

Before the sale, at Graham Budd Auctions at Sotheby's in London, the medal had been expected to fetch between £2,500 and £3,500. It was bought by a mystery bidder.

The medal was presented to Banks after Bolton were defeated 4-3 by Blackpool at Wembley in May, 1953.

Banks was 33 and played full-back for the Whites.

He was defending against England legend Stanley Matthews.

Earlier this year a winner’s medal from the White Horse final of 1923 between Bolton and West Ham went under the hammer for £8,640.

Bolton won 2-0 and the medal belonged to Wanderers player Jimmy Seddon.
