TWO of the top ten most congested traffic hotspots in Greater Manchester are in Bolton, a new study has revealed.

Junction 3 of the M61 at Kearsley is the third worst junction in the region, beaten to the top spot only by the end of the M67 near Mottram and the Princess Parkway in south Manchester.

The M61’s junction 2 at Walkden is number eight in the list, while junction 1 with the M60 is number nine.

Gary Whittle from Bolton Institute of Advanced Motorists said the reason for traffic being so bad in Bolton was its position at the confluence of so many major roads and the lack of good public transport.

He said: “There’s not a good enough public transport system around Greater Manchester—we know there’s overcrowding on the trains. Congestion gets people frustrated, and then you end up with road rage. It doesn’t lend itself towards considerate driving, which we in the Institute of Advanced Motorists would like to see more of.”

The report comes from a study by INRIX, an international traffic information provider.

The company’s analysis uses data from millions of GPS devices.

The report finds that drivers in Greater Manchester waste more time in traffic jams than anywhere else in the UK — 72 hours per year.
