TWO Bolton MPs are calling for London-style bus services, controlled by local authorities, to be rolled out to the rest of the country.

Bolton South-east MP Dr Brian Iddon and Bolton North East MP David Crausby have added their names to a Commons Early Day Motion.

The motion, signed by more than 100 MPs, calls for London's franchising system to be introduced across the country to stem waning passenger numbers and to regulate services more fairly.

Mr Crausby said: "We need to be more in control of our own destiny rather than just being at the beck and call of the Minister for Transport. The North-west is entitled to have more of a say over its transport budget."

Critics of the current system say companies flood popular and profitable routes and neglect less popular ones.

Dr Iddon added: "I work in London, as David does, and we have seen the advantages of regulation and we want it for other big conurbations like Greater Manchester."
