NEW improved closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) are to be installed at the Royal Bolton Hospital to protect staff from violent patients and visitors.
It is a strange society we live in when people who seek help from doctors and nurses seem to think it is OK to abuse, spit or attack those same staff.
It also means much-needed resources will be used to pay for CCTV when the cash could have been used for patient care.
Recently, security guards were introduced in hotspots such as Accident and Emergency, and had to be issued with stab vests.
A survey revealed that, in one 12-month period, one in 10 staff had been kicked, punched, slapped or spat at by patients or visitors.
It is outrageous that members of the caring profession, who have dedicated their lives to helping others, should be subjected to such unwarranted violence.
It goes without saying that the full force of the law should be brought to bear on anyone who abuses or hurts hospital staff.
