Elite League Ice Hockey: A round up of all the action from the Elite Ice Hockey League on Sunday Decembr 12

Edinburgh Capitals 5 Nottingham Panthers 11

Having won 5-4 last night, Edinburgh were going for the double over Nottingham. After losing the first period 5-1 it was an uphill struggle for them and they just couldn’t make it a double weekend win as Panthers gained very sweet revenge. As for Panthers themselves, with Cardiff not having a game tonight they regained 2nd spot in the league standings.

The visitors got off to the perfect start as David-Alexandre Beauregard scored with a shorthanded goal at 5.16. This was added to by a brace of goals from Jonathan Zion with the first coming on the powerplay at 8.37 and then at 15.32. Capitals did get on the scoreboard as Adam Taylor netted at 17.31. But it was no more than a consolation as the Panthers struck twice more with goals from Jeff Heerema at 17.49 and Robert Lachowicz at 19.33 to take the period on a 5-1 score line.

The hosts closed the game up a bit in the second period as Chris St Jaques scored at 24.31 and David Lomas at 30.08. However, they let their guard down in between these two goals at 29.25 as David Clarke netted with a shorthanded goal.

Capitals' powerplay unit did not turn up as Clarke with his second and his team's third shorthanded goal of the night at 43.24 was followed at 46.18 Jeff Heerema with his second of the game for Panthers to lead 8-3 which should have put the game out the reach of the home side.

However, two quick fire goals from the hosts, the first from Iain Bowie 47.37 and then Nick Fanto at 48.50 and all of a sudden it was a three-goal game.

Having seen the Capitals get within touching distance Jeff Heerema hit home his hat trick at 51.50 and then Jade Galbraith added a tenth for the Panthers at 52.09. It was all one way now and it came as no surprise that the Panthers got another from the stick of Bill Ryan at 55.52 as he completed the scoring on the night.

Dundee Stars 4 Hull Stingrays 2

After a three game losing run on the road, Stars returned home and picked up a welcome two points to end Stingrays own four game unbeaten spell.

The only time the visitors had the ascendancy was when Lee Esders fired them into the lead after only 1.26 but Stars hit back in some style with two goals in 17 seconds in the 8th minute to turn the game their way. At 7.34 Jay Latulippe was on target and then at 7.51 Stars were ahead thanks to Brent Hughes. The home side went on from there and added a third goal in the opening period from Peter Cartwright at 19.37 to take control.

A blank second period followed despite Stars remaining well in command, outshooting Stingrays by 20 to 8 and missing a penalty shot by Mark Nebus in the 32nd minute but that two goal difference ensured that the visitors could not be ruled out of the contest just yet.

When Nebus atoned for his earlier miss by shooting Stars 4-1 ahead at 49.39 it looked safe for the home side but Stingrays almost immediately pulled one back when Andrew Coburn scored at 50.00 but despite Stingrays finishing the stronger they were unable to breach a much tighter home defence than of late and the points remained in Tayside.

Sheffield Steelers 3 Coventry Blaze 2

On the night when Steelers legend Ron Shudra was inducted into the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame his old side celebrated with a win over struggling Blaze, winning by the odd goal in five in a fairly chippy encounter thanks to a goal in the 56th minute by Ashley Tait, who himself was celebrating his 400th EIHL competitive appearance.

The home side took the honours with the only goal of the first period when Neil Clark fired home at 9.59. The second period followed a similar pattern with the Blaze offence continuing to struggle against a solid home defence and it was that man Clark again on the spot to shoot Steelers 2-0 ahead at 37.54.

A Blaze comeback in the third period began when Greg Chambers netted at 49.47 and seemed to have taken the game into overtime when Russell Cowley levelled at 55.12 but 40 seconds later it was Tait on the mark for the home side to give them the points and see Blaze lose their third straight.
