THE funeral of anti-war protester Bertie Lewis will take place next week.

Chicago-born Mr Lewis, pictured, who served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, died from a heart attack at the Royal Bolton Hospital on December 22.

His funeral will take place at the East Chapel in Overdale on Thursday, January 13 at 10.45am.

His friend Malcolm Pittock said: “There will be a reception for Bertie after the funeral but those details are still being finalised.

“The family are looking at suitable venues because we think a lot of people will want to pay their respects to Bertie.”

Right up until his death, Mr Lewis, who lived in Farnworth, had been a familiar town centre figure, every Saturday brandishing his placard in Victoria Square, demonstrating against the war in Iraq and Afghanistan or the threat of nuclear weapons.

Despite his RAF background, Mr Lewis took his protests to the street every week in Bolton and regularly in London.
