A MAN has been jailed for killing his friend in a vicious attack.

Neil Brook, aged 33, of Wilbraham Road, Walkden, was found guilty of the manslaughter of 27-year-old Josef John Witkowski.

He was today handed an Indeterminate sentence for the Public Protection at Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square. He must serve a minimum of six years before being considered for parole.

The police were called to Brook's flat in the early hours of Sunday 25 July 2010 and found Josef with multiple injuries including stab wounds.

The two men had previously been friends but had apparently fallen out over a text message.

This led to them meeting up at the flat but Brook, who had armed himself with knives, immediately stabbed Josef.

Josef tried to defend himself by escaping to the bathroom and holding the door closed but the door was destroyed by Brook who continued his attack, stabbing Josef numerous times.

A post mortem examination concluded the cause of Josef's death was multiple stab wounds.

Senior Investigating Officer Vinny Chadwick said: "It is sad that what started off as a friendship ended in the tragic death of Josef.

"Once again this case highlights the dangers of knives and the consequences of choosing to arm yourself with them.

"A minor argument which could easily have been resolved by talking things through has led to Josef's unnecessary death and has caused his family terrible trauma."
