A RECYCLING centre in Bolton closed last night after budget cuts made by Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority.
The Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) in Union Road closed at 8pm along with other centres in Greater Manchester.
Alternative sites at Hurstwood Court, in Raikes Lane Industrial Estate, and Cemetery Road, Radcliffe, are being dubbed as ‘super sites’ which can accept up to 23 different types of materials for recycling.
There is also a standard sized alternative HWRC site in Blackhorse Street, Blackrod. The Union Road site was shut down because there was no room to develop it further due to its limited size. Chairman of the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority, Cllr Neil Swannick, said: “The authority did not want to close any sites but unfortunately financial savings had to be made.”
The authority provides waste disposal services for more than one million households in Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford, and handles around five per cent of national municipal waste.
