BOLTON’S annual ploughing competition takes place on Sunday — providing the rains hold off.
Competitors from as far as Shropshire will be taking part at Brinsop Hall Farm, off the A6, Westhoughton.
It is the third event to be held in Bolton after it was revived by retired farmer Graham Farrington following a 50-year break.
There used to be regular ploughing events held in Blackrod until the 1920s, which Mr Farrington’s father competed.
The Westhoughton Ploughing Society continued to hold competitions but the group became defunct after the last contest in 1959.
The contest was revived in 2009 as part of the Haigh, Aspull and Blackrod show but became an event in its own right.
Mr Farrington said: “There isn’t anything else like it in the area, the nearest ploughing competitions are in Cheshire and Bickerstaffe.”
Judges will be looking at the straightness and uniformity of the furrows — the long narrow trench cut into the ground — as well as how well the weeds are buried.
