Police are hunting for two men after a sandwich shop was robbed in Atherton.

The incident happened just before 8.30pm on Tuesday September 20, when two hooded men went into Subway on Eckersley Precinct on Mealhouse Lane in Atherton.

The two men walked up to the counter and ordered the three staff members to get on the floor. They then demanded money from the till, before escaping with a quantity of cash.

The two men ran out of the shop and got into a nearby silver estate car, which was parked on the car park between Flapper Fold Lane and Alma Street.

A third man was waiting in the car and drove the trio away down Mealhouse Lane, heading towards Leigh.

No-one was injured during the robbery but staff members were left traumatised.

The two men that went into the shop are white and described as having Merseyside accents. They both wore dark blue hooded jackets with scarves to cover their faces and dark trousers. They also had socks on over their hands.

Detective Constable Kevin Telford from Wigan CID said: “If anyone was on or around the precinct near the time of this robbery and saw either the men that went into the shop or the car waiting nearby outside, please get in touch.

“These men have understandably caused considerable distress to the staff members working at this store and we are determined to identify those responsible and take them off our streets.

“We also believe that the getaway car went through a red traffic light at speed while driving from Flapper Fold Lane onto Mealhouse Lane. There was an unidentified car behind them at the time and we would like to speak to anyone that was in this car to see if they can provide any further details on the offenders.

“All information we receive will be treated in confidence.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police at Wigan CID on 0161 856 7352 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
