A WOMAN is fighting for her life after being injured in a house blaze.

Firefighters were called to Burns Avenue in Atherton at 12.45am yesterday.

The woman, who is in her 40s, had managed to flee the burning end terraced house, but crews had to rescue her dog — a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

She suffered severe burns to her hands and smoke inhalation and was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital before being transferred to the specialist burns unit at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester.

The dog was given emergency first aid but had to be put down by a vet.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the blaze.

Station Manager, Geoff Thornley, said: “Having rescued the dog, we gave it oxygen and attended its burns until it could be transferred to a veterinary hospital where, sadly, it had to be put down.

“Thankfully, neighbours were alerted to the fire through a smoke alarm installed at the property.

“Over the next couple of days we will be in the area offering reassurance and free smoke alarms, highlight fire safety in the home and offer local residents a free Home Fire Risk Assessment.”

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, added: “It was a shock when I came out this morning and saw the police and fire service.

“It is a real shame and sad the dog was put down.”

Another added: “Neighbours woke us up so we could get out.

“We saw them trying to revive the dog but it had to be put to sleep. There was only her and the dog and she loved that dog.”
