THE last England International cap won by Bolton legend Nat Lofthouse is still up for grabs for fanatics willing to pay £1,500 for it.

The cap went under the hammer at a huge sale of football memorabilia yesterday but failed to meet its reserve price.

Mullock Madeley auctioneers in Ludlow, Shropshire, hoped it would raise up to £2,000 when they auctioned it along with other treasured items from the world of football. But the highest bid was for just £1,000, which means the cap is still for sale to fans willing to meet the reserve price.

William Andrews, who is the auction house's football memorabilia expert, said: "We failed to sell the cap as we didn't attract a high enough bid.

"It will go into another sale at a later date and people interested in buying it can also get in touch with us."

The blue six-panelled cap with silver braid tassel and trim and embroidered with the famous England three lions badge at the front and with E v W (for England v Wales) 1958-59 on the peak has also been signed by Nat Lofthouse on the inside.

The cap was put up for auction by a friend of Nat's who has now moved to Spain and found it while he was clearing out his house.

A menu card believed to be the last item ever signed by the Busby Babes before they boarded the fateful flight from Belgrade on the night of the Munich Air Disaster in 1958 was sold for £12,000 in the auction.

The card, autographed by 14 members of the famous squad, was bought by a private collector from London.

Auction charges brought the total the buyer had to pay to more than £14,000.
