THERE was a time when the use of fireworks was restricted to November 5 and officially organised events.
These days, it appears they are let off by anyone at any time of the year - though not always legally.
Fire safety officers have destroyed 1.5 tonnes of illegal fireworks to launch a new campaign aimed at reducing the number of accidents during the bonfire period.
Between April, 2005, and March, 2006, there were 19 firework-related injuries in the area.
Let us hope this campaign persuades shopkeepers selling fireworks and those buying them to behave in a more responsible manner.
