WORKERS at one of the region's oldest manufacturers discovered today all 165 jobs at the factory have been lost.

Management at Sandusky Walmsley on Crompton Way told the remaining staff at the site that no buyer for the business had come forward, and that the factory would close "within two or three weeks."

One hundred and forty staff were made redundant immediately after the announcement at 1pm, with about 25 more staying on to wind down the plant.

Unions condemned the move as "despicable," and said that not enough had been done to try and save the plant and the jobs.

It also accused the company of laying off staff with no consultation and no redundancy pay.

Administrators were called into the factory on August 14 and immediately took the decision to make 158 of the 323 staff redundant.
