LIBRARIES could become “a thing of the past”, a Bolton MP has warned. David Crausby, MP for Bolton North East, pictured, is supporting the efforts of campaigners who have come together to protect public libraries from the huge cuts being forced onto councils by the Government.

Speak Up For Libraries is a coalition of organisations and campaigners working to protect libraries and library staff, now and in the future. The group recently led a delegation of supporters to Parliament to highlight the role that library services, run by professionally trained and qualified staff, play in the community.

Mr Crausby has signed an Early Day Motion in Parliament which welcomes the formation of Speak Up For Libraries and calls on the Government to undertake a thorough assessment of the state of the public library service and develop a national vision for its future.

He said: “The Government have forced Bolton Council to cut more than £130m from its budget, the direct result is libraries and other important local services are being closed.”
