CRAFTY conmen are trying to trick members of the public over their PPI claims. Claims expert Ajaz Khan, pictured, joint owner of Bolton company Credit Claims, which had had success in the recent Bolton & Bury Business Awards, said some individuals are calling people and saying they are from the Ministry of Justice.
They state the person is owed money for mis-sold PPI (Payment Protection Insurance) and ask for an upfront fee before the money can be released. Mr Khan said: “Local people need to know the Ministry of Justice never calls customers asking for fees or for bank details.
These are fraudsters who are targeting people they think may be vulnerable to this sort of scam. Unfortunately, their scams are becoming ever more sophisticated and some victims have handed over thousands of pounds.”
He urged the public to be on guard and never hand over money to any company that calls out of the blue. Mr Khan’s comments come in the wake of calls from consumer magazine Which? to tighten regulations around the claims management sector, especially in relation to PPI.
