Star of the sitcom The Royle Family and soap Emmerdale, Peter Martin has died aged 82. 

The actor is best known for playing the role of Jim and Barbara Royle's neighbour Joe Carroll on the sitcom for 14 years. 

Martin also starred as Len Reynolds in Emmerdale from 2001 until 2007 along with playing a number of roles in Coronation Street. 

The news of Martin's passing came after friends of the late star took to Facebook as Dave Shann wrote: "My friend, drinking partner, fishing buddy past away on Wednesday morning, very sad, many of you will know him from TV, RIP Peter Martin, we had some great laughs."

A fellow friend of the star Paul Willam Sykes said: "My condolences to his friends and family. R. I. P. Peter it was nice to share some laughter with you."

Also amongst those sharing tributes was Melanie Moorhouse said: "What a lovely gentleman he was."

Martin's character in The Royle Family was known for being shy but loveable and would prove to be a talented singer after a few drinks. 

Along with his role on the sitcom he featured in the film Brassed Off, as well as the popular shows All Creatures Great and Small, Last of the Summer Wine, Chucklevision and more.
