UK drivers have complained about an "irritating" and "useless" road sign that causes too much uncertainty.
A post in the r/drivingUK Reddit thread shared annoyance at the 'Road Ahead Closed' sign.
The red and white rectangular sign is a temporary one to give advance warning to drivers and is usually paired with a diversion sign.
Despite being formally introduced back in 1965 along with most other modern British road signs, plenty have had issues with it.
The post read: "So you come across this sign. Now what? How far ahead is the closure? 300 yards? A mile? 15 miles? Shall I turn round now?
"If I’m only going a few miles further, will I be Ok to keep going?
"The most irritating occasions are when you tentatively keep driving down the main road towards your destination, and eventually discover a blocked-off minor side road - it turns out that’s what the sign referred to.
"Would it really be beyond the wit of man to have a different standard sign, eg 'Side Road Ahead Closed' or something?"

The post seemed to strike a chord with many people, as it received more than 1,300 comments.
One person wrote: "They are next to useless as they used to say distance and what road is closed as most the time it is just a minor side road that is closed ahead."
Another concurred: "Dammed right.
"Utterly meaningless lack of information."
A third posted: "Half the time it's not even closed no matter how far you go."
Another shared: "I always just go through them unless I can SEE the obstruction as it seems the majority of the time it's simply a lie."
One user replied to the post, claiming they plan and manage large road improvement schemes.
Explaining some of the issues around the sign, they explained: "The Road Ahead Closed sign is a prescribed legal sign.
"We have to put it out, we can’t change it, however it should be accompanied by either a yellow Diversion sign, preferably with a symbol for you to follow, or what I do, is put a sign with it that says 'closed after X junction' or 'closed after Y landmark' say a school or a large shop etc.
"I’ve also tried distances, and the big motorway style digital message signs to tell people which diversion to take and how long the diversion is!"
Despite this, the user said issues often came up due to motorists not knowing what upcoming junctions were called, not everyone knowing how long a mile is, and people blindly following their sat nav.
They added: "Honestly, I’d love to know what people think would work?
"If you can come up with a system of closing roads, getting everyone to where they need to go without any confusion, your skills would be in high demand!"
RAC poll finds motorists want Road Ahead Closed signs to be changed
The RAC shared in May 2026 that 57% of 1.672 UK drivers surveyed find Road Ahead Closed signs ‘uninformative’ when trying to understand the details of road closures they’re approaching.
Of those who find the signs uninformative, the most common reasons for confusion were that they don’t state which road is closed (60%), or how far ahead the road is closed (56%).
Meanwhile, 15% don’t trust that the signage is up to date.
Additionally, 93% of all drivers who responded to the survey would be in favour of councils and their contractors providing more information about where closures are.

Only 30% of drivers surveyed by the RAC said they always follow yellow diversion signs after seeing red Road Ahead Closed signs, with 34% hoping the closed road isn’t the one that they are currently on.
RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “Drivers ought to be able to trust the signs they are supposed to follow, and it wouldn’t take a lot of effort to improve them.
"By including key information, such as which road is closed, and ideally for how long, drivers would surely have more trust in the signage and be less likely to ignore official advice.”
