TRIBUTES have been paid to a 75-year-old man who died after being hit by a car in Accrington.

The incident took place on Blackburn Road at the junction with Holland Street just after 5pm on Saturday.

A Volkswagen Golf was travelling along Blackburn Road towards Church when it struck Harry Davis as he crossed the road.

Friends have paid tribute to the ‘well-known’ pensioner.

Cllr Tim O’Kane said: “I have known him for four decades and was regular on the quiz circuit.

“It is tragic that he was died in such circumstances.

“He appeared with me on Battle of the Brains TV show in 2008 on the BBC.

“He was a really affable guy and witty and did not have an enemy in the world.

“It is such a big loss to the community as a whole.

“There was so much to like about him and was so gentle.

“He was a big expert in geography and could tell you every capital city when asked and took his quizzes seriously.”

The occupants of the Golf, two men both aged 22 from Blackburn, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

They have since been released under investigation.
