RESIDENTS have been having their say on the debate over the complete closure of Leigh Market due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wigan Council closed the market after the Government's lockdown measures came into force but Leigh MP James Grundy called for "essential food stalls" to reopen.

He said government guidance states clearly that businesses offering an essential service such as fresh food, should remain open".

However, the council stood by its decision to close the market, saying it is not classed as a food market and claimed many traders "did not feel comfortable opening" during the pandemic.

Readers have shared their views on the issue.

John-Paul Yates said: "Very poor decision by the council in my opinion. They could have managed this a whole lot better.

Sam Sparkle Aldred added: "Yes I agree they should be allowed to reopen and offer delivery services just like Bolton Council have allowed their stall holders to do. I am stuck in and all I want to do is order a fruit and veg box at a reasonable price and I am unable to do this."

And Dawn Rigby added: "The market should reopen for food stalls, as like we have seen other markets are open for the same, also like I have said numerous times it's less stressful and helpful for the elderly.

Denise Monaghan said: "Should never have closed the food stalls. To many people rely on them. And with no notice. Appalling

And Dakota Rachelle Rose added: "I can agree with this, it was a lot quieter in the markets and was going there for my fruit and veg as supermarkets had none. So would think this a good idea"

However, one reader said: "It seems a strange decision but you must respect the market traders if the Leigh ones genuinely say that they do not want to open."
