THE Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has received a generous donation which will go towards its breast cancer care.

Janet Ellison, patient navigator for the South Lancashire Breast Screening Unit, had planned a display for this year’s Chorley Flower Show but due to its cancellation she decided to bring the display closer to home.

With the help of her neighbours Hoghton Lane, in the village of Hoghton near Preston, was transformed into a fun and floral display to raise money for the worthy cause.

The Bolton News:

Homemade cakes, cookies, and fudge were sold as well as fresh flower arrangements donated by Fiona Huyton from Willowbuds Flowers.

Alongside the sweet treats, information was also given on the importance of the breast screening programme and being ‘Breast Aware’.

A total of £614 was raised for the WWL's Three Wishes Charity's In Pink fund, which aims to purchase a new ultrasound machine and other equipment for the service.

The new machine will help to improve the number of patients that can be seen, help to identify abnormalities quicker, and reduce waiting times.

The Bolton News:

Speaking on the success of her event Janet said; “Everyone really enjoyed the day and we were amazed at the generosity of the local public especially in these difficult times.”

“It was so lovely to have my neighbours volunteer to take part and help us raise money and awareness for a cause I’m so passionate about.”

This sentiment was echoed by a resident fellow who said: “We were thrilled to be invited to help raise funds for ‘In Pink’ as attending a routine mammogram appointment helped save the life of one of our very dear friends.

“The sun shone, the gardens looked fabulous decorated in pink lights, ribbons, and balloons and most of all we raised a lot of money for a fantastic charity – it was certainly a day to remember!”

The Bolton News:

The overwhelming response to the event has encouraged the residents of Hoghton Lane and they’ve already agreed to turn their street pink again next year.

The South Lancashire Breast Screening Unit has now resumed its screening programme and eligible women aged between 50to 70 years will be sent an open invitation informing them when their examination is due.
