THE council has fired out a warning to residents after being made aware of scam emails claiming to be from local authority or government departments.

Wigan Council says it has been alerted to a "number of scam emails" which purport to be from the local authority or the government.

The council warned residents to be vigilant and check any correspondence is legitimate before opening any links or replying.

The local authority stressed it does not contact residents by telephone, text message or email.

In a public statement, Wigan Council said: "We've been made aware of a number of scam emails reporting to be from council or government departments.

"We do contact residents by telephone, text and email, however, we remind residents to remain vigilant and to check whether correspondence from the council is legitimate before opening links or responding.

"If you are unsure about an email, text or phone call, please check the council website for updates and relevant phone numbers in order to contact us directly."
