THE assault trial of Leigh Centurions star Anthony Gelling has been delayed.

Gelling was due to stand trial at Liverpool Crown Court today, Wednesday, accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm on partner Toni Mackey.

But proceedings were adjourned for the day due to the illness of the prosecuting barrister, and it is anticipated that the case will instead be opened tomorrow, Thursday.

Warrington Wolves head coach Steve Price and assistant Lee Briers were present in the public gallery during a short hearing this morning, in which Gelling spoke only to confirm his name.

The 30-year-old centre, allegedly assaulted Ms Mackey during an incident at the couple’s home on Cronton Lane Mew in Widnes on February 6 last year.

She attended Whiston Hospital the following day having suffered ‘serious’ injuries, including a fractured eye socket.

Gelling turned out for the Wolves during the 2020 season, with the New Zealand-born Cook Islands international having also represented Widnes Vikings, Wigan Warriors and New Zealand Warriors during his rugby league career.
