FIREFIGHTERS came to the rescue much to the delight of a little boy.

Crews from Atherton Fire Station were called to Westhoughton after the youngster aged 16 months accidentally got locked in a car — with the keys inside with him.

His mother was said to be more worried than the baby — who firefighters said seemed to think they were playing a game as they tried to get him out.

The incident happened in Brandforth Gardens at 9.30am today.

Firefighters used a coat hanger to retrieve the keys through one of the car windows.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “Every time we got near the keys the boy would go for them thinking we were playing a game. So we had to distract him to the other side of the car and managed to get the keys out. It was Lloyd Watson who managed to get the keys on the hanger

“He was fine, the mum was a little teary eyed, but he was okay.” Firefighters managed to free the little one within minutes.
