MICHAEL Cayton won the Mast 10k race on Winter Hill, finishing six minutes ahead of anyone else.

With fellow Harriers Matthew Wilson and Geoff Leech, he also won the team prize ahead of Red Rose Harriers.

Two days earlier just over the hill at Rivington, Julian Goudge followed up his second place in the Windermere marathon the previous week with a win in the Ian Hesketh Memorial Duathlon organised by Tony Hesketh and comprising a 22k bike ride between two 5k runs.

David Jackson, Dave Purnell and Layne Mercer also had top-10 finishes.

On the fells, Phil Marsden was second at Hutton Roof, almost emulating Danny Hope’s win last year in the same race.

Hope took on the Saddleworth fell race and was a strong third place with Michael Chadderton and Dan Gilbert also getting top-10 results.

Dave Milliken was in the Lakes as the sole Harrier at the tough Helvellyn-and-the-Dodds race with a fine sixth-placed finish.

The junior fell squad were at West Nab in Yorkshire for the fourth leg of the Fell Runners' Association English junior championship, having learned after three legs the squad was lying ninth out of 41 clubs.

Toby Middleton, despite an early fall, was fourth at under-15s' level, while the top Harriers girl was Charlotte Vickers running in the u11s race.

In the popular Edinburgh Marathon, it was a tale of two Harriers as Richard Howarth, a marathon specialist, had a great 15th-place finish and was first M40 in a field of more than 7,500 runners.

Edinburgh was the first-ever marathon for Angela Kmiec – another graduate of the club’s social runner’s group. She found the 14 to 22-mile section tough but persevered to enjoy the fast and scenic route and was still smiling at the finish.

Eva Baldwin, an u14, was ninth overall at Haigh Woodland parkrun and the first female finisher.

Her time of 20mins 14secs gave her a superb 80-per-cent age-graded result at the end of a week in which she set a new personal best at 1500m at the Trafford Open medal event.

Also at Trafford, Ella Pendlebury won the 800m in a PB.

Alistair Sharrock gained three medals with first places in the 75m and 150m and a silver in the long jump.

There were also PBs for Isabella Merritt and Matthew Flatters, who was then third at Ormskirk parkrun.

James Kevan was in Poland and was first at the Krakow parkrun in a fast 15:38, just beating Eva’s age grading with almost 83 per cent.

At Bolton parkrun, Andrew Crickmore is building a smart CV in the Harriers’ colours.

Last week he had a top-100 finish at the Manchester 10k and this week second at Bolton.

At the Queens Park junior parkrun, Marty Arnot-Smith got a new PB in being first finisher and Jamie Rockliffe had one of his highest finishes in third place.
