THIS week's first nostalgia picture sees a brief return to football and an appeal from reader Joseph Goode.

Mr Goode has sent in cuttings featuring two old photographs of St Gregory's RC Secondary School sides – the first of which states they were Farnworth Schools' champions.

It is believed the pictures are from the 1960s and Mr Goode would like readers to help identify the players if they remember that team.

He said: "These St Gregory's teams won the local Farnworth and Worsley junior then senior schools' cup competitions between 1961 and 1968.

"I have many good memories of these schools but I cannot remember all the names of the junior team except Dave Harrison, M Walsh, M Gregory, Phil Kay, M Topping and M Hulton.

"I am next to the goalie and the teacher was Mr Entwistle."

If you can help provide names for Mr Goode, email david.pye@nqnw.co.uk.

THE second archive photograph was published in last week's nostalgia section and features the Astley and Tyldesley cricket team from 1996.

It stoked up memories for several readers who recalled the names in the line-up.

Simon Nicklin said: "The names are, back from left, Roger Davies, Paul Higgins, Chris Bullock, Dave Hughes, Jim Bennett and Rob Bennett; front, Karl Gorse, Ian Robinson, me, Charles Dagnall (pro) and Andy Clarke."

David Hughes added: "I can identify everybody because I am in the picture.

"Back row, from left, are Roger Davis, Paul Higgins, Chris Bullock, me, Jim Bennett and Robert Bennett; front, Karl Gorse, Ian Robinson, captain Simon Nicklin, pro Charlie Dagnall and Andy Clare and the game was played at Blackrod."

Paul Emmison also recognised Karl Gorse on the bottom left.
