RAIN gave some concern about completion of Friday’s scheduled matches and any knock-on effect to Saturday’s finals.

Fortunately the rain stopped and by holding just two matches indoors Friday’s schedule was completed.

This left just three semi-finals to be played on Saturday morning – both under-18s boys’ singles semis and the handicap men's doubles semi.

The boys’ singles saw Greg Collins and Ian Axford proceed to the afternoon’s final.

Semi-final losers Joe Rogerson and Richard Flanagan played for third and fourth place with Rogerson winning 4-3, 4-1.

In the other semi-final, Omer Butt and Majid Ali beat Ted Kenny and Stuart Roach 6-5, 6-4.

Finals day started at Markland Hill at 1pm with the boys’ u18s singles and the men's level doubles.

Collins won the boys’ event, beating Ian Axford 4-1, 4-3.

The doubles match saw two unseeded pairs contest the final with Martin Bromley and Will Hart taking on the hard-hitting pair Adam Thompson and Ryan Spackman, and Bromley’s experience shone through as he and Hart won 6-2, 6-2.

The men's and ladies' singles finals went according to seeding with number one seeds Jonnie Shacklady and Rebecca Baldwin beating second seeds James Moores and Vicky Coxon 6-6, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-1, respectively.

The mixed doubles final also went with seeding with Jonnie Shacklady and Rebecca Baldwin beating Greg Collins and Natalie Flinn 6-3, 6-3.

In the ladies' doubles, number one seeds Rebecca Baldwin and Lauren Williams had been knocked out in the shock of the tournament by the experienced pairing of Yvonne Hunt and Jo Crompton.

Hunt and Crompton took on second seeds Rachel Branagan and Vicky Coxon. In the first set another shock seemed possible but after Branagan and Coxon took it 6-4 they saw off their opponents with a 6-1 victory.

In the handicapped events, Bob Woodcock and Kath Taylor retained their 50-plus mixed doubles title beating Mick Knowles and Sara Rowan 6-4, 6-3.

The open-age handicapped mixed doubles saw a much tighter match with Dave Bedford and Steph Gill beating Ian Hodgkinson and Christina Millington 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Bedford and Taylor then joined as a pair in the 60-plus handicapped mixed.

Taking on Bernard Kirkbright and Janet Maxwell Bedford and Taylor took the first set 6-4 before their energy levels dipped and they lost the next two sets 6-3, 6-1.
