ASTLEY and Tyldesley have a trio of national cycle speedway champions.

Emily Burgess, John White and Steve Harris raced to British championship glory at the weekend.

Burgess was a double winner, taking both the under-14s and u16s girls' titles, while White became u12s boys' champion and Harris took the veterans' top prize.

The finals were split over Saturday and Sunday, taking place at Astley and Tyldesley's Gin Pit track on Saturday and at Sheffield and Bury the following day.

White raced to a 20-point maximum score on his home track on Saturday to win his first British individual final to accompany his three British Youth and Junior Grand Prix series wins at u8s, u10s and u12s.

He also finished third in the u14s boys' competition.

Burgess won the u14s title with a 16-point maximum score, finishing ahead of defending champion Maddie Saunders, of Poole.

On day two of the finals weekend 14-year-old Burgess raced to another 16-points maximum score to finish first in the u16s individual championship at Sheffield.

Harris beat Norwich's Paddy Wenn in a run-off at Bury after both had scored 14 points, to win the over-50s veterans' final.

It was his 17th British individual title, which is an all-time record in the sport.
