BOLTON St Catherine's Academy completed a clean sweep of all Year 4 events in their own primary school cluster competitions during the last school year.

They took the BSCA Cup for seven-a-side football with the narrowest of wins, taking the honours on goal difference ahead of St Osmund and Andrew's.

BSCA had plus-10 goals against plus-seven for St Osmunds as both schools conceded only one goal throughout the competition.

St Osmunds scored the goal against BSCA as they beat them 1-0 when the two teams met, before the host school hit back with wins against Tonge Moor (5-0), Leverhulme (3-0) and Moorgate (3-0).

St Osmunds' undoing was a shock 1-0 defeat to Leverhulme which gave BSCA the lifeline they duly accepted.

Leverhulme finished third with Moorgate fourth and Tonge Moor fifth.

BSCA's final success in the Year 4 competitions came at seven-a-side Gaelic football.

They lifted the Trevor O'Grady Shield when their B team beat St Osmunds 6-1 in the final.

The four teams who entered played each other in a league followed by a knockout based on their placing.

BSCA B finished top of the league with three wins, scoring 27 unanswered points, followed by St Osmunds, BSCA A and Moorgate.

In the semi-finals, BSCA B hammered Moorgate 11-0 and St Osmunds had a 3-0 victory over BSCA A who won the third/fourth-place game against Moorgate 6-4.

Blackshaw won the BSCA Cup for Year 5/6 seven-a-side football.

Eight schools were split into two groups with Group A comprising BSCA, Leverhulme, Tonge Moor and Red Lane, and Group B consisting of St Osmunds, Blackshaw, Moorgate and St Stephen and All Martyrs.

After the group stage BSCA, Leverhulme, Moorgate and St Stephens were eliminated.

It was close in Group B where Blackshaw edged Moorgate out of a qualifying spot by a single goal on goal difference – which was to prove significant later in the competition.

In the first semi-final, St Osmunds beat Tonge Moor by one goal, with Blackshaw again scraping through their next game, beating Red Lane on penalties after the second semi-final had failed to produce a winner despite two spells of extra time.

The final followed immediately after that game and it finished 0-0 after extra time, meaning penalties again for Blackshaw who coolly slotted home all their three and their goalkeeper Alfie Ainsworth saved St Osmunds' first and third spot kicks.

Tonge Moor were deserved winners of the Coleman Cup for mixed rounders with four wins out of four.

Five teams participated from four schools – Leverhulme A and B, Tonge Moor, Blackshaw and St Osmunds – with matches played on a round-robin league basis and the nine-a-side teams allowed a maximum of three boys.

The runners-up were Leverhulme A who edged out Blackshaw on rounders scored after both teams finished with two wins and two defeats.

St Osmunds were fourth, ahead of Leverhulme B on rounders scored after both teams registered one win.

The St Lawrence Cup for Key Stage 2 Gaelic football went to Blackshaw who beat St Osmunds in a thrilling final.

St Osmunds took an early lead with a three-pointer from Jake Whelan.

Blackshaw hit back with two full-length moves, both brilliantly finished by Year 5 Finlay Robinson with two three-pointers.

St Osmunds were denied by outstanding Blackshaw defending, and while they pulled a point back through Oliver Smallwood, Blackshaw held on.

The four-team competition was played in a league format followed by play-offs with first playing fourth and second versus third in the semi-finals.

Three points are awarded for scoring over the bar – which are called points – and one point for under the bar, which is called a goal.

St Osmunds dominated the group stage with three wins out of three followed by BSCA B with two wins.

Blackshaw were third with one victory over a very young and gutsy BSCA A team which comprised mainly Year 3 and 4 pupils.

St Osmunds hammered BSCA A 13-0 in the first semi-final and Blackshaw beat BSCA B by a single three-pointer in the second.

BSCA B beat their A team 6-0 in the third/fourth-place play-off.

St Osmunds beat off the challenge of BSCA and Moorgate to retain the Christ Church Cup for Year 2 tag rugby league.

All teams played each other twice and after the first round of matches there was nothing to separate them with the three matches ending in score draws.

The first win came in match four when St Osmunds beat BSCA 1-0.

This was followed by a single-try victory for BSCA – who finished second – over Moorgate before the last game ended 2-2 between St Osmunds and third-place Moorgate.

BSCA got a victory in the tag rugby league competition when their B team won all four of their matches to lift the Draper Cup.

Five teams from four schools took part with matches played on a league basis.

St Osmunds finished second with three wins – their only defeat coming against the eventual winners by two tries to nil.

Blackshaw and Moorgate tied for third with BSCA A fifth.
