DEANE B overcame club-mates Deane A in the B Section of the Bolton Badminton League in a match that could have gone either way.

Janice Jackson and Tony Waring, the A team’s first couple, shared the opening games, claiming the first 21-17 and Pat Beck and Praveen Pindola reciprocated by taking the second 21-17 for the B team.

In another two tight games, the A team’s Jean Smith and Mike Wood won their games 21-18, 23-21, against Georgina Ryding and Robert Brocklehurst .

The B team hit back when the third couples met, Maggie Wong and Barath Bhudia winning both games against Teresa Gough and Brian Strickland.

The match continued to seesaw when, in the clash of the first couples, the B team’s Ryding and Brocklehurst won both games 21-19, 21-12, against Jackson and Waring.

The tables turned when the second couples met and the A team’s Smith and Wood claimed both 21-11, 21-18, against Beck and Pindolia.

Going into the level doubles the score was all square at 5-5.

In the first pair of ladies’ games the tight struggle continued with Gough and Jackson claiming the first, 25-23, for the A team against Wong and Ryding, who won the second 21-18.

In the first pair of men’s games Bhudia and Brocklehurst edged the B team ahead when they took both games 21-18, 21-17, against Strickland and Waring.

The B team’s women, Wong and Beck, then claimed the match, winning 21-16, 21-15, against Gough and Smith.

The second pair of men’s games was shared. Bhudia and Pindolia claimed the first 21-17, and Strickland and Wood fought on valiantly to win the second 21-13.

In C Section, Westhoughton E hosted Forrest F and Forrest’s Ann Schofield and John Curtis shared the opening games, winning the first 21-18 and Westhoughton’s first couple, Louise Vernon and Brian Hutchinson, took the second 21-12.

The following pair of games was shared, Shaz Jaden and Ivan Chee for Forrest claimed the first 21-11 and Geoff Everitt and his young daughter, Chloe, won the second 21-14.

When the third couples met, Forrest claimed both games 21-13, 21-18, when junior Leah Rowlinson, making her debut in the adult league, played alongside Ray Schofield against Beth Hughes and David Clayton.

The next mixed games went Westhoughton’s way when Vernon and Hutchinson won both, 21-19, 21-16, against Jaden and Chee.

When the second couples met their games were shared, Westhoughton’s two Everitts taking the first 21-19, and Schofield and Curtis claiming the second 21-11.

At the conclusion of the mixed, the score was level at 5-5 but eighth-placed Westhoughton’s ladies Hughes and Vernon edged their team ahead, claiming the first pair of ladies’ games 21-10, 21-7, against Jaden and Rowlinson.

Forrest’s men then fought back Schofield and Chee winning two comfortable games, 21-9, 21-13, against Clayton and Hutchinson to even the score.

The second pair of ladies’ games was shared – Schofield and Rowlinson winning the first 21-18, and Hughes and Everitt taking the second 21-17.

The result came down to the final men’s set and seventh-placed Forrest’s Schofield and Curtis claimed both games 21-18, 21-14, against Clayton and Everitt to secure a 10-8 triumph for their team.
