IT went to the wire in the Bolton Badminton League A Section clash between Hawkshaw B and Westhoughton A as the two sides played out a draw.

The opening games were shared when Westhoughton’s second couple, Abbie Edwards and Chris King, claimed the first 21-16, and Debbie Taylor and Cameron Holt took the second, by a comfortable margin of 21-7.

Sarah Jameson and James Lowe, Westhoughton’s first couple, then claimed both their games 21-18 against Kerrie Lawlor and Phill Worthington.

When the third couples met, fourth-placed Hawkshaw’s Choi Davidson and Scott Heywood took both games 21-14, 21-12, against Alison Muddiman and Adam Carney.

In the clash of the first couples, Hawkshaw’s, Taylor and Holt won both games 21-12, 21-16, against Jameson and Lowe.

The match see-sawed back to Westhoughton, with Edwards and King coming out on top against Lawlor and Worthington, 21-16, 21-18.

At the conclusion of the mixed games the score was all square at 5-5.

The match continued to be difficult to predict in the first level doubles games.

League leaders Westhoughton’s Muddiman and Jameson then claimed the first pair of ladies’ games 21-19, 21-19, against Davidson and Taylor.

Hawkshaw’s men, Heywood and Holt, then evened the score, winning 21-19, 21-13, against Carney and Lowe.

The match again swung back to Westhoughton, who made their team favourites to win when Muddiman and Edwards claimed the second pair of ladies’ games 21-13, 21-13, against Davidson and Lawlor.

Going into the final men’s games, with the result hanging in the balance, it was a case of who would hold their nerve.

And Heywood and Worthington dug in and claimed the games 21-16, 21-14, against Carney and King, to secure a well-deserved draw.
