HORWICH Harriers fielded a bumper squad of 24 runners in four teams at the British Fell Relay championships at Grasmere where a record turnout of more than 1,300 fell runners contested the honours on a foggy day.

Pudsey and Bramley ran out overall winners for the first time since 2003 and Horwich had success with the V40 team taking third place in the vets' competition.

The standout performances came from James Kevan for the A team, who was eighth fastest individual runner on leg four, and from Danny Hope and Nick Leigh on leg two for the vets' team in which they were the 15th fastest pairing.

Sixteen-year-old Robert Seddon made his full fell race debut with an impressive 58th place on leg four for the mixed team.

He took the baton from dad Mark who was pleased they both finished without injury as next week they are running as a team in the tough two-day OMM mountain marathon.

Club chairman, Peter Ramsdale said: "What a day – all four teams did themselves and the club proud."

The juniors were not to be outdone and took on the South East Lancs cross-country course at Heaton Park.

The under-15 boys won the team competition, led by Lucas Milliken in first place and backed up by Matthew Mair, Isaac Battye and Isaac Simmonite in third, fifth and sixth places, respectively.

At u13s' level, the girls’ team were third with English Schools champion Charlotte Wilkinson in third place leading home Emma Bradley, Imogen Andreassen and Imogen Wrigley.

There was also an individual fourth place for Sam Bradley at u11s and a fifth place for Ethan Isaacs at u13s.

The club’s vets are also racking up good results.

At Heaton Park, Dave Milliken, inspired by his son’s performance, took the V50 first place in the men’s cross country race, while Steve Williams was second V60.

The V60 team of Williams, Webb and Stone took the team category first place.

On Sunday, in the Mast Blast race, the club’s head coach, Stephen Pearson, made a rare race appearance and took first place for V60s and Mary White was close behind to take the V65 first place.

Suzanne Budgett was second F55 at the Standish Hall trail race and Gail Maxfield was first F60.

Julie Williamson prepared for the Hell of a Hill challenge in November by running the Great Langdale road marathon in good time over a route with 3,400 feet of ascent.

Geoff Leech was third M45 at the Beat the Reaper 10k, finishing 29th in a field of 340.

Lukas Siska continues to fly the Horwich flag in the USA where he won the 10k road race at Shreveport in Louisiana.

Steve Thomasson continues his European travels with an impressive half marathon result in Dresden, especially as he tripped on a tramline with three miles to go.

In parkrun, Erica Booth was first female at Preston and Isabella Merritt was second female at Worsley Woods.

Marty Arnot-Smith and Aidan McKenna were first and second at Queens Park junior parkrun.
