BURNDEN has a new king of the hill this year in Mark Jackson, who completed the massive achievement of five Hell of a Hill marathons in five days, climbing Rivington Pike a total of 25 times.

After showing great consistency over the first four days, he finished with a real flourish on the final day, posting a personal-best time and his first sub-five hours marathon with a time of 4hrs 56mins 3secs, crossing the line in 12th place on the day.

It gave him an aggregate score for all five days of 26:28:33.

Jackson finished 11th on day one in 5:09:08, and followed that up with times of 5:43:08 on day two (19th place), 5:28:18 on day three (16th) and 5:11:56 on the fourth day (27th) before his final-day success.

On the last day, David Morrison joined him at the start line at Bibby’s Farm in Heath Charnock, Chorley, and completed his solo marathon in 6:04:49.

Rob Short led home a strong Burnden turnout at the 13 Arches Half Marathon in Radcliffe, coming home in 13th place with a time of 1:26:30, a few minutes ahead of Paul Duke in 23rd place with 1:30:00 and Lee White in 29th place with 1:33:03.

Simon Marland was third M55 in 1:41:32, Keith Thomas second M60 in 1:42:10 and Phil Glassbrook second M70 in 2:11:04.

Lyndsay Darbyshire was fifth in the ladies' race and second F50 in 1:45:05. Mumtaz Patel was third F45 in 1:49:10 and Anne Ferguson won the F60 category with her time of 1:49:57.

Paula Pilling and Andy Staveley were the leading Burnden performers at the Red Rose Cross Country League meet at Marl Pits in Rossendale.

Pilling was in 23rd place and fourth F40 with a time of 22:07 in the ladies' race, closely followed by Anne Ferguson, again winning her F60 age group in 23:07.

Shirley Staveley was third F50 in 25:07, followed by Claire McKenna (25:17), Kelly Sullavan (27:38) and Liz Hopley (28:55).

The team finished eighth out of 17 clubs and were second in the vets' team standings out of 16 eligible clubs.

Andy Staveley was second V55 – missing out on top spot by just 10 seconds – posting a time of 33:36, with Steve Nolan close behind, third V55 in 34:22.

Pete Hopley (35:02) and Keith Thomas (36:49) completed the club’s interest. The men combined to finish eighth in the vets' team standings out of 14 clubs.

Louise and Tony Wall took part in the Bingley Harriers versus Cyclists fell race in Yorkshire – a novel event where runners and cyclists take on each other over a tough 5.5-mile course with 650 feet of climbing.

Tony finished in 51:07 with Louise crossing the line in 1:11:14.
