SACRED Heart won the Bolton School Games Year 5/6 tag rugby tournament.

They beat off the challenge of 15 other primary schools to take the town title and will represent Bolton at the Greater Manchester School Games along with fellow Westhoughton school Eatock whom they beat 2-0 in the final.

More than 170 youngsters took part in the Bolton competition, which was hosted by Westhoughton Lions, supported by Bolton Wanderers Community Trust and Premier Education, and officiated by Westhoughton High School and Thornleigh Salesian College sports leaders.

The teams played seven rounds of matches which culminated in Eatock and Gaskell winning their groups and being joined in the semi-finals by runners-up Sacred Heart and Lostock.

Johnson Fold and St Thomas of Canterbury finished on the same points as Sacred Heart in their group, with the latter going through due to having scored more tries.

Eatock beat a fast and agile Lostock 1-0 in the first semi before Sacred Heart defeated a skilful Gaskell 2-1.

The Greater Manchester School Games will take place in March.
