CREWE Alexandra have launched an investigation into an allegation of racist abuse aimed at Bolton Wanderers’ Shakeel Jones-Griffiths during a recent Under-23s match.

The Bolton News revealed last week that one supporter was ejected from a development squad game, played on November 30, after aiming a comment towards the 18-year-old midfielder.

Crewe are now collating evidence to present to the Football Association after the incident was included in the referee’s report.

“Crewe Alexandra are aware of a situation regarding an alleged racist remark made by a spectator to a Bolton Wanderers player in a recent Under-23 match played at the Alexandra Stadium,” a spokesperson said.

“Appropriate action was taken at the time by stewards and the match referee and coaching staff were duly informed.

“The process of gathering statements from home and away players, staff and spectators is well underway and investigations will continue until the matter is resolved.

“Racism in football, and indeed any walk of life, should not be tolerated and anyone culpable will be dealt with accordingly.”

Wanderers have offered counselling to Jones-Griffiths and agreed to work with the Football Association or inclusion charity Kick It Out during the investigation.

A statement from the club read: “Bolton Wanderers are aware of the situation regarding alleged racist abuse towards one of our Under-23 players at their recent game against Crewe Alexandra at the Alexandra Stadium.

“The allegation was reported to the referee during the game and appropriate action was taken by the home side in regards to the spectator in question.

“Racism in any walk of life is not to be tolerated and we thank Crewe Alexandra for the swift response to the situation.

“The Bolton Wanderers player involved will receive the necessary support from the club.”
