WANDERERS booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a stellar second-half display to beat Walsall 5-2.

But how did the players rate? Marc Iles gives his verdict.

The Bolton News:

WANDERERS (4-3-3)

BEN ALNWICK…6

Made a smart stop from Ferrier just after half time but had no chance with either of the goals, especially the wicked deflection for the second.

PAWEL OLKOWSKI…6

Didn’t get control of Jarvis in the first half but recovered after the break to help push Wanderers forward.

DAVID WHEATER…7

Never allowed to rest completely by the lively Ferrier but defended the penalty box well, restricting the Saddlers to shots from distance for the most part.

MARK BEEVERS…6.5

Lost Cook for the opening goal but also made an excellent challenge to deny Ferrier later in the first half. Comfortable after the break.

JONATHAN GROUNDS…6

Looked unsteady in the opening half an hour but grew in confidence as the game wore on and was encouraged to push further up alongside Noone.

JOSH VELA…4

Just didn’t get up to speed. Lost possession needlessly on a few occasions and wasn’t his normal harrying self.

JASON LOWE…6.5

Back in midfield, Lowe used the ball as economically as ever and tried to get things moving when he could.

LUKE MURPHY…7

Went close with a first-half header and always looked to be positive in possession. After such a long time out of the team, a genuine plus on the day.

CRAIG NOONE…8

Wasn’t supposed to be in the team – but after swapping with the injured Ameobi he totally changed the game when he moved on to the left flank.

JOSH MAGENNIS…8.5

It has been a while since Wanderers had a hat-trick hero and there was a bit of everything here – goal-poaching and pure number nine play.

YANIC WILDSCHUT…5.5

Limped off after twisting his ankle, which really sums up the Dutchman’s luck since being at Bolton. Had looked full of running in the opening exchanges.

Subs: Buckley 6.5, 46 (for Vela) – Made a positive contribution in the second half.

Donaldson 7, 46 (for Wildschut) – Goal drought over, linked really well with Magennis.

Connell 89 (for Murphy) – Great to see the 17-year-old given an opportunity.

Not used: Little, Oztumer, Hall, Williams.

Walsall: Roberts; Devlin, Guthrie, Martin, Leahy; Ismail, Kinsella, Dobson, Jarvis; Ferrier, Cook.

Subs: Morris 70 (for Jarvis), Koulyar 75 (for Ismail)

The Bolton News:

Not used: Edwards, Dunn, Johnson, Gordon, Osbourne.

Referee: Darren England 8/10 – Got all the major calls completely correct. One of the better ones we have seen at the UniBol this season.

Attendance: 5,506 (1,498) – A statement of defiance or apathy from the Wanderers fans? Very much up for debate.
