DAVID Wheater reckons Wanderers have got a chance to complete a league double against West Brom, if they keep their defensive discipline.

The club skipper expects to have plenty on the pitch to occupy his mind on the night against the Championship’s highest-scoring side.

The Baggies have scored 55 times in 27 games – with both Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez well into double figures.

Wanderers let a 1-0 lead slip against Bristol City last weekend but, anxious to avoid a repeat, Wheater says focus will be key if Wanderers are to earn a result.

“We’re good in training, don’t worry about what’s going on outside the training ground, listen to the manager, do what he says and try to get on with the job,” he said.

“I think we need to stay in our positions better. We defended really well in the Stoke game – the strikers helped too – we defended as a unit. We need to do more of that and then maybe get a goal on the break against a top team like that.

“They will be hard to break down so we’ll need to defend a lot and hopefully counter attack them.

“We went there earlier in the season and upset them so we need to be confident. We’ve beaten Derby, we’ve beaten West Brom – we seem to turn it on a bit against the top teams.

“I like a challenge. If you get a clean sheet against a side like that it feels better.”

Meanwhile, West Brom striker Dwight Gayle expects a tough time breaking down “defensive-based” Wanderers.

With 14 goals in 23 appearances this season, Gayle is part of the highest-scoring side in the Championship.

The Baggies could leapfrog Sheffield United into third place with victory at the University of Bolton Stadium following the Blades’ 1-0 defeat against Swansea City.

Gayle and the West Brom squad have just returned from a nine-day warm weather training camp in Dubai – and he is looking forward to getting back into competitive action.

“Obviously you look at the other results and the standings in the league but the most important thing is that we get back to doing what we need to do, and that’s to win games,” he said.

“It’s certainly going to come down to what we do at the end of the day.

“There’s no point in getting too focussed on other team’s results otherwise we’ll forget to get the result ourselves and then we’ll find ourselves struggling.

“We know Bolton are a defensive-based team and we know that we’re going to have to break them down.

“Any game in the Championship is going to be difficult. We know we’ll have to bring our A-game and be up for it.

“It’s very important for us to get three points, but they obviously need the three points themselves so it’s going to be a tough one. We’re looking forward to it.”
