WANDERERS (4-2-3-1)

REMI MATTHEWS…7

Made two very good, if hard to spot saves, forcing Browne’s shot on to the post and touching Barkhuizen’s effort wide.

JASON LOWE…5

After a positive performance at Sheffield United, Lowe struggled to get anything going forward against Preston down the right.

DAVID WHEATER…5

Didn’t look his usual commanding self for some reason. A yard off the pace, while the visitors’ front line seemed to have the run on him.

MARC WILSON…4.5

Did some good things early on but lost his way completely, culminating in a poor pass which led to the second goal.

JONATHAN GROUNDS…4

Desperately disappointing return to the team for an experienced full-back. Unavailable on Tuesday night at Birmingham, which might be just as well.

CALLUM CONNOLLY…5

Had struggled until the second half when he got shifted to the left side of defence. Coped well after that.

LUCA CONNELL…6

Only had 20 minutes on the pitch, showed some decent touches, gave the ball away a couple of times. Nothing to mark him down.

CRAIG NOONE…4

Looks so short on confidence at the moment. Rarely threatened the Preston back line and spent a lot of his time chasing.

GARY O’NEIL…4.5

Put in a good early ball for Magennis but even though most of Wanderers’ attacking play came down the right, he failed to deliver after that.

SAMMY AMEOBI…4

Looks bereft of morale. Ameobi played centrally but just didn’t get involved or pose anything like a threat on the Preston goal.

JOSH MAGENNIS…6

Worked hard and had three decent chances. Wanderers have been working on his fitness and it showed here.

Subs: Vela 5, 23 (for Connell) – Didn’t have a say on the game.

Donaldson 6, 62 (for Grounds) – Grabbed a long-overdue league goal.

Pritchard 77 (for Noone) – Arrived too late to affect anything.

Not used: Alnwick, Buckley, Olkowski, Dyer

The Bolton News:

Preston (4-2-3-1): Rudd; Fisher, Storey, Davies, Hughes; Pearson, Gallagher; Potts, Browne, Barkhuizen; Maguire.

Subs: Nmecha 77 (for Gallagher), Ledson 87 (for Pearson), Johnston 90 (for Browne)

Not used: Earl, Clarke, Crowe, Stockley.

Referee: Andy Madley (West Yorkshire) 7/10 – A fairly straightforward derby to manage, given the fireworks which had occurred back in September at Deepdale.
