PHIL Parkinson reckons Wanderers can still make this week a success – if they can produce a full-charge performance at Wigan on Saturday.

Optimism spilling over from the victory against Millwall and the possibility of an imminent takeover was dulled slightly on Tuesday night by a sub-par show against Sheffield Wednesday.

Thanks to results elsewhere, Bolton are still five points from safety, but Parkinson cannot underestimate the importance a win against the Latics could have on his side’s survival effort.

“We have got to go to Wigan and put one almighty effort in our legs to produce a performance,” he said. “We need points to close to gap between us and them.

“We were disappointed with the Sheffield Wednesday game that we couldn’t back up the weekend but the aim for Wigan is to make it six points out of nine going into the international break.

“It’s not pressure, I just felt the win we got at the weekend – as it is for any at this level – we have to be at 100 per cent, flat out.

“Both teams looked leggy. Sheffield had the derby and then played Derby and it was that first goal that gives them an energy boost.

“We will regroup and then go again on Saturday.”

Parkinson stood by his decision to make two changes against Wednesday, where he brought Jason Lowe and Craig Noone back into his midfield.

“You always, when there is a bit of flatness in the performance, wonder whether you should have made more changes,” said the Bolton boss, who will be back in the dugout on Saturday following his two-game suspension.

“We were worried about Andy Taylor going again, first of all, and Will Buckley, who hadn’t played for a while, so we made those two changes. But at the same time we wanted to keep the continuity of the weekend.

“You always wonder if you could have done this, or that, but there was nothing in the game during the first half and we had some good moments.

“It was just that little bit of quality which we needed. We had it at the weekend – but not on that occasion.”
