A walk to raise funds for unpaid staff at Bolton Wanderers managed to rake in £3,000, The Bolton News understands.

Organised by Matty Lawrenson, editor of the BWFC and Proud Facebook page, around 80 walkers – and three dogs - set off from Burnden Park to the University of Bolton Stadium.

They were met at the finale of the six-mile trip by fans’ liaison officer, and well-known former Wanderer, Tony Kelly, which provided a surprise to the person who had organised the event.

“I’d been picked up and went ahead to the Beehive to do some of the live filming,” explained Anthony Bonney, who lent a hand as cameraman on the day, “and I was told in the car that Tony was going to be there. None of us were expecting it.

“And when we told Matt that he was there waiting at the finishing line, he was in shock. The round of applause he got was amazing. He deserved it.”

Money raised - much of it through a JustGiving Page online - has been donated to the Bolton Wanderers Community Trust, who have orchestrated support for staff during the last few months when pay problems at the club have left people vulnerable.
