WANDERERS have been handed a short trip to Rochdale in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The Whites will travel to Spotland in the second week of the new season, with games to be played on August 17 or 18.

The two clubs have met before in the competition, dating back to 1969 when Bolton rattled six past their neighbours at Burnden Park. John Byrom grabbed a hat-trick, Ian Greaves scored twice and Terry Wharton added a sixth from the spot.

In 1973, Wanderers put four past Dale at Spotland – Stuart Lee grabbed a brace, with Paul Jones and Alan Waldron also on the scoresheet.

And in 1989 a two-legged game saw Bolton come out 6-3 aggregate victors. Steve Thompson scored in a 2-1 defeat away from home before Tony Philliskirk, David Reeves, Robbie Savage, Barry Cowdrill and Julian Darby blasted five in the return leg.
