DAVID Flitcroft says the wheels are already in motion for Wanderers’ January recruitment drive.

The club has contacted at least two potential signings with a view to strengthening their chances of avoiding relegation to League Two.

Though priorities could change if the Whites pick up any further significant injuries in the next fortnight, Flitcroft revealed that transfer talks have advanced in recent weeks.

“It’s a movable feast,” he said after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Peterborough United. “It really does depend on what happens – you can think you have someone over the line and then a Championship clubs swoops in.

“At the minute the players we want tell us they want to come but it’s such a complex market in January.

“You can have a target but it can change quickly because of an injury or a suspension. People prioritise and we could get two injuries between now and then – so our way of thinking changes.

“But over the last four weeks we have been working on it, trying to capture all the details possible.

“We have met with agents, met with players and we’ll continue to speak with them, working around the clock to make sure a plan is in place.”

Wanderers are stymied by a transfer embargo and are also trying to mend youth team and development squads, which have been badly hit in the last 12 months.

Flitcroft is upbeat, however, that the club can emerge from the winter transfer window stronger.

“We can only have 23 players in the squad with the embargo being on, so our hands are tied there,” he said. “But Bolton Wanderers is a big draw, people want to come here and play for Keith Hill. He gets the best out of players.

“We are quite relaxed about the way the market is going to move but we need to make sure we’re out in front of it.

“The group needs help and everyone who knows the situation we’re in will understand that.

“It has a knock-on effect. The Under-18s, the Under-23s, they are all playing up at the moment – 16s and playing in 18s, 18s in 23s, and so we need to rebuild from the top to bottom.

“As we get closer to January there certainly will be ins and outs.”
