REMI Matthews believe Wanderers can do themselves a massive favour in the January transfer market by rediscovering their winning form against Southend United.

With one point from the last three games, Bolton’s survival push has plateaued in recent weeks, placing even greater emphasis on victory against Sol Campbell’s Blues on Saturday.

Matthews is concerned that a failure to keep in touch with the sides above Wanderers in the table could force the club’s ownership to rein in their investment next month.

Eager to make up more ground, Matthews reckons a run of three home games in four weeks could well define the season ahead.

“The last couple of results haven’t been good, we know that,” he said.

“Both the Accrington games were poor, we were a bit better against AFC Wimbledon, and then Peterborough was okay. They are a good team and I think the performance second half was pretty good.

“Our feet are on the ground. We know how the gaffer wants us to play and it’s taking time to bed in but we need to get some momentum again, or it’ll be too late.

“We’re all interested to see if the gaffer brings in players in January and it’s no great secret that we’re weak in some areas. The embargo doesn’t make it any easier.

“But we need to do our bit now because it could get to January and the owners look at the league table thinking ‘we’re too far adrift’ or it might be that they look at it and think ‘yeah, we’ve got a chance.’

“It’s up to us to get some points on the board over the next couple of weeks to give them something to think about.”

Matthews has also enjoyed working with new goalkeeper coach Mike Pollitt since he joined the club from Rotherham United.

“He’s been a legend since he came in, a great guy,” he told The Bolton News.

“I was close with Lee Butler and I have a lot to thank him for but when something has to change in football there’s nothing better than finding someone who’s on your level and has the same sort of beliefs. He’s got a really good record in football.”

He added: “Most people think they know about goalkeeping, and they are entitled to an opinion, but they really don’t know what is going on.

“(By bringing Pollitt in) The new regime wanted to put their own stamp on it.

“They are good people and you get the feeling they care about the club. They are Bolton born and bred and want to make an impression, to make things better.

“Polly is Flicker’s good mate so it makes a lot of sense – but it’s a good move for him as well. In the grand scheme Bolton is a bigger club than Rotherham.”
