Atletico Madrid and a huge crowd: Bolton through the years

This week in Wanderers history

1933: WANDERERS’ biggest-ever crowd of 69,912 watched as Manchester United knocked Bolton out of the FA Cup at the fifth-round stage.

Jack Milson and Ray Westwood scored the goals for Charles Foweraker’s team, who were actually relegated from the First Division that season, finishing 21st.

1974: IVAN Campo will turn 46 on Friday, February 21. The Spaniard became a smash hit at Bolton when he arrived from Real Madrid in 2002 and went on to make 172 Premier League appearances, scoring 13 times.

2000: EIDUR Gudjohnsen scored the only goal of the game as Wanderers beat Charlton 1-0 at the Reebok, booking a semi-final against Aston Villa at Wembley. It would be the club’s first appearance in the last four of the competition since 1958.

2008: WANDERERS held their nerves to secure victory against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Cup. El Hadji-Diouf had given them a 1-0 advantage at the Reebok – a game in which Sergio Aguero was also sent off – and the Spaniards struggled to break down their visitors in the return leg.

IT is nearly 97 years since this picture was taken. The Sheffield United captain, William “Billy” Gillespie, left, tossing up with the Bolton Wanderers captain, John Reid Smith, during the start of the FA Cup semi-final at Manchester United’s Old Trafford.

David Jack was once again the Bolton hero, scoring the only goal of the game to send his side to Wembley, where they would face Derby County’s conquerors West Ham United. The striker had performed a similar feat in the previous three rounds.

Wanderers of course went on to win the cup in what became known as the White Horse Final - signalling the start of the club’s most trophy-laden and successful period in its history.

Wanderers fans turned out in force on the opening day of the 1996/97 to see Alan Thompson secure a point at Port Vale for Colin Todd’s men. THIS week’s mystery man didn’t have the greatest Wanderers career.

A midfielder who played for the club in the 2014/15 season, he made just three appearances and later played for Colchester United and St Patrick’s Athletic.

To make matters even worse, he also managed to miss a penalty during his time at Bolton.
