WANDERERS legend Gudni Bergsson led the tributes to former Bolton Wanderers Supporters’ Trust chairman Daniel Izza, who has passed away at the age of 52.

A key figure in the creation of the trust, a well-known local solicitor and Bolton fan, Izza was due to get married to his partner, Gail, in four weeks.

News of his sudden passing was confirmed by the BWFCST, with Bergsson adding a note of personal sorrow in their statement.

“Daniel was a great guy, a friend, and such a devoted Bolton supporter,” he said. “He will be sorely missed.

“My thoughts are with Gail and his family and friends.”

Izza passed away at home on Tuesday afternoon but his death is understood not to be COVID-related.

The legal professional had been instrumental in first securing and then protecting the University of Bolton Stadium as an Asset of Community Value.

Before becoming a solicitor he had worked in football as an intermediary.

A statement from the trust said: “It is with great sadness that we reflect on the passing of our former chairman, Daniel Izza.

“Daniel was instrumental in establishing the Supporters’ Trust and was a member of the original steering group that got the trust off the ground in 2016 as the club entered into a period of extreme turbulence.

“Daniel became chairman in June 2017 and worked tirelessly to advance the trust’s objectives of security and stability for our beloved club. He used his expertise as a lawyer to great effect in making sense of the many legal and financial implications through the hugely difficult times faced by the club in the last few years.

“Daniel was also pivotal in securing the ACV on the stadium, which provided protection against a swift and secret sale of the ground without consultation. This remains one of the Supporters’ Trust’s greatest achievements and a lasting legacy for Daniel.

“Daniel was introduced to the BWFCST back in 2016 by our great friend, Gudni Bergsson, who has been in contact with us to ask that we pass on his sincere condolences.

“The trust board would like to extend our sincerest condolences to his partner, Gail, and all the Izza family at this terrible time.

“We would also like to thank Daniel for his unwavering support of the BWFCST. May you rest in peace.”
